Type: Full-time, two-year employment contract (renewal possible). 

Location: Anywhere in the continental United States. LMA/LMF and all affiliates are virtual organizations. You need reliable internet access and a commercial airport nearby for occasional travel, when conditions allow. 

Open: Starts as soon as possible, target February 2023. 

Reports to: Managing Director, Word in Black. 

Compensation: $55,000/year plus a competitive benefits package, including a choice of health plans, 401(k), technology stipend, and generous PTO/holidays. This is a one-year employment contract that may be renewed depending on funding. 

Job Summary: We seek a versatile, skilled writer and editor with experience in digital publishing and a strong knowledge of the Black community, racial inequities, and solutions to them as our community engagement manager. This role will be responsible for ensuring Word In Black’s reporting finds a large and loyal national audience. This will include extending audience engagement via social media posts, hosting live events with Word In Black reporters, working with national news outlets such as NPR, CNN, The New York Times, Grist/Uproot, etc., to use Word In Black as a resource, and speaking at events nationwide on behalf of Word In Black.

Job Description: The community engagement manager will be an evangelist for Word In Black, while also advocating for the audience to ensure that our reporting meets the needs of the Black community. This role will require a versatile journalist who can identify the trending story, while also amplifying enterprise stories that will lead the news cycle. The editor will work with Word In Black’s managing director and reporters to help elevate daily content and be comfortable thinking of new ways to tell stories — be it through audio, video, text, or illustration. We’re looking for an innovator and collaborator who is comfortable engaging authentically with the Black community, building relationships, and fostering trust in Word In Black’s reporting.

Essence of the job:

Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Be involved in the editorial process from start to finish, including attending idea generation meetings, planning campaigns to support major editorial packages, and executing those ideas to reach our audience.
  • Collaborating with the managing director and Word In Black reporters to identify and assign stories of strong interest to Word In Black audiences.
  • Be enthusiastically active on social media and in the community as an ambassador for Word In Black.
  • Developing content and engagement strategies with an eye toward SEO, social media, and newsletters and working with reporters to maximize search engine optimization and help workshop SEO-optimized headlines.
  • Assist the managing director in planning the editorial calendar, assigning stories to our reporting team, and editing copy.
  • Use analytics and surveys to tell us more about who our audience is, and how and why they use our content. Analyze and interpret this data to help us understand and expand our readership and help our journalism have a greater impact.
  • Monitor and report on metrics and audience engagement.

The ideal candidate must have:  

  • A track record of working remotely and a demonstrated ability to think creatively and entrepreneurially in order to excel and achieve goals.
  • Experience building relationships with the Black community and reporting with an asset frame and equity lens.
  • An interest in and skills to create news products that will reach the Black community in fresh and innovative ways. 
  • Advanced knowledge of audience metrics and expertise in analyzing data.
  • Understanding of search, social listening tools, and engagement journalism.
  • Demonstrated interest in social media trends, audience behavior, and audience experience.
  • Sharp digital instincts and fresh ideas about audience growth, content creation, and social media.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, solid editorial judgment, and the ability to write quickly and cleanly.
  • A bachelor’s degree or comparable experience is required. A degree in journalism is a plus.
