Black women have significantly contributed to various musical genres, including pop, jazz, R&B, pop, rock & roll, and more. A few vocalists have achieved the highest level of success in the business in each of these musical genres.
The artists on this “Top 5 Black female powerhouse singers” list have released incredible songs that have topped music charts thanks to their captivating voices, engaging melodies, and social themes.
In celebration of Black Women’s History Month this March, the Defender Network pays tribute to Black women’s profound impact and musical prowess by recognizing the “Top 5 Black Female powerhouse singers.”
These phenomenal artists have not only shaped the music industry with their unparalleled talents but have also become trailblazers and inspirations, leaving an indelible mark on future generations.
Whitney Houston
With over 200 million recordings sold globally, singer-actress Whitney Houston is one of the all-time best-selling musicians. Houston is the only performer to have seven No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits in a row. She is the first female artist to have two number-one Billboard 200 Album honors (previously “Top Pop Albums”) on the Billboard magazine year-end rankings, and she is the second artist behind Elton John.
In 2023, Rolling Stone listed Houston as the second-greatest singer of all time, citing her effect on several performers in popular music. She also had a tremendous career, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame winning numerous accolades, including six Grammy Awards, two Emmy Awards, and 28 Guinness World Records.
Aretha Franklin
Known by many as the “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin was a renowned singer, songwriter and pianist. Her extraordinary vocal ability was recognized at a young age, and the age of 18, she signed a recording artist contract with Columbia Records. Franklin’s meteoric rise to prominence and broad commercial success began in 1966. She is among the best-selling musicians, selling an astounding 75 million CDs. Franklin won numerous honors during her career, including the National Medal of Arts and eighteen Grammy Awards. In 2022, Rolling Stone ranked her the greatest singer of all time, making her the first female artist to be admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Mariah Carey
American singer Mariah Carey is well-known for her songwriting and five-octave vocal range, contributing to her success in the 1990s with hit singles and albums. Through her crossover cooperation, Carey is recognized for having inspired and influenced multiple generations of pop and R&B musicians and for fusing hip-hop and pop music. She is among the best-selling singers ever with more than 220 million recordings sold globally. “One Sweet Day,” “Fantasy” and “Always Be My Baby” are a few of her successful hits.
Tina Turner
Tina Turner earned the title “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and became a soul music powerhouse. As the lead vocalist for the Ike & Tina Turner Revenue, she became well-known. Her solo career took off in the 1980s, yielding singles including “Better Be Good to Me,” “Typical Male,” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” She was the first Black artist and the first woman on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1967. Tuner has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling artists. In addition, she has won 12 Grammy Awards, the Women of the Year Award, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015.
Beyoncé
Beyoncé, a powerhouse among Black female singers, showcased her extraordinary talents from a remarkably young age, participating in singing and dancing competitions at the tender age of seven. In the late 1990s, her ascent to stardom commenced as a member of the highly acclaimed R&B girl group Destiny’s Child, ultimately becoming one of the best-selling girl groups in music history. Following the group’s dissolution, Beyoncé embarked on a solo career that has been nothing short of stellar, marked by record-breaking albums, chart-topping hits, and a multitude of prestigious awards, including an impressive collection of 32 Grammy Awards, 31 BET Awards, and 17 Soul Train Music Awards.
