About Word In Black

Word In Black is a national media platform uniting leading Black publishers and organizations under one powerful brand. Backed by the legacy of the Black Press, we combine solutions-focused journalism with research, branded content, and events to amplify Black voices, address racial inequities, and foster prosperous outcomes for Black communities.

Word In Black was launched as a collaborative of legacy Black publishers dedicated to addressing racial inequities by centering the Black experience and equipping Black Americans with the knowledge and resources to prosper and drive meaningful change.

We envision a world where Black stories are honored, Black voices are amplified, and racial equity is a reality. Through knowledge, we empower. Through storytelling, we uplift. We strive for a future where Black communities have equitable access to opportunities and the prosperity they rightfully deserve.

From Freedom’s Journal in 1827 to today, the Black Press has provided news and information to Black communities, amplified Black voices and long championed civil rights. Word In Black builds on this foundation, carrying forward the spirit of advocacy and representation with innovative solutions to engage and empower Black America.

Role Purpose

The Data Analyst will play a critical role in shaping the future of Black media by helping us see and serve Black audiences more deeply and intentionally. As a founding member of the Word In Black Insights team, you’ll dive into audience data, uncover meaningful patterns, and build actionable intelligence that fuels everything from editorial strategy to marketing campaigns. You’ll be responsible for surfacing the metrics that matter, building benchmarks, and helping us grow our national reach in authentic and measurable ways.

We’re looking for a mission-driven innovator who thrives on impact, strategy, and storytelling through data.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain dashboards that surface key audience insights, benchmarks, and growth trends.
  • Work with Cloud storage, clean rooms, CDPs and ETL tools such as Snowflake, NinjaCat, HighTouch, and others to unify data sources.
  • Identify and refine KPIs that align with our mission to engage and empower Black audiences.
  • Collaborate with editorial, marketing, events, and product teams to deliver strategic insights.
  • Lead testing and experimentation frameworks (A/B testing, cohort analysis, engagement funnels).
  • Work with our technology lead on partner integrations into the audience intelligence platform and set up dashboards and run reports.
  • Partner with the Insights & Research Director to integrate survey and qualitative data into broader insights.
  • Develop models and reports that help predict and influence audience behavior and lifecycle.

Impact & Measurement

  • Define what success looks like for our audience growth across multiple channels.
  • Provide ongoing analysis that links audience engagement to content strategy and revenue.
  • Make strategic recommendations that result in measurable improvements in reach, engagement, and retention.
  • Translate complex data into clear, compelling narratives for internal and external stakeholders.

Must-Have Skills & Strengths

  • Deep experience in data analytics (3+ years) in media, audience development, or related fields.
  • Fluency in data tools (SQL, Python, Looker, Tableau, or equivalent Business Intelligence platforms).
  • Hands-on experience with CDPs and ETLs (NinjaCat, HighTouch, etc) a plus.
  • Ability to synthesize multiple data streams into actionable audience strategies.
  • Strategic thinker with excellent communication skills — especially in turning data into stories.
  • Passionate about racial equity, media innovation, and building platforms that serve Black communities.

Preferred Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience working in newsrooms, media startups, or civic tech/data projects.
  • Experience with data governance, privacy frameworks, and ethical data practices.
  • Strong curiosity about Black culture, media consumption, and digital behavior trends.
  • Proactive thinker with an entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative approach — thrives in startup environments.
