“Yes, I could have been a content creator, but journalism is my path and I’m sticking to it,” Joel Mitchell says in the Word In Black video below.
The graduating senior at Florida A&M University was one of several young journalists to share why they’re choosing journalism as a career path instead of content creation or social media influencing. We spoke with Mitchell, as well as college junior Jonathan Shepard and recent graduates Liv Clements and Courtney Hollman at the 2025 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention.
