In 2015, when Freddy Gray died in the back of a Baltimore Police van, the city's Presbyterian Church community took up the mantle for racial justice. Now, the church is about to spend $2.27 million to repair and upgrade churches in Black neighborhoods. Black Presbyterian leaders say the money will also go towards training and youth outreach.

A relentless civil rights warrior, groundbreaking politician and humanitarian, political leaders and civil rights advocates paid tribute to the late Rev. Jesse Jackson upon the announcement of his death on Tuesday. Born in South Carolina, Jackson marched with Martin Luther King, Jr., before establishing himself as an organizer and advocate in Chicago. Jackson founded Operation PUSH and ran for president in 1984 and 1988 by establishing a base of poor and working-class voters across racial lines — the so-called Rainbow Coalition.

Accompanied by thousands of supporters, a group of Buddhist monks completed their journey from Texas to Washington, D.C., a walk calling for an end to global conflicts and violence. Upon completion of their 2,000-mile walk, the monks were greeted by dignitaries, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and feted during an interfaith service at Washington National Cathedral. For Rev. Rhonda Boozer-Yeary, a community engagement manager at the University of Maryland Medical Center, the event was transcendent: “It didn’t matter if you followed the teachings of Jesus, Buddha, Allah, or didn't follow any teachings at all. In that moment in time, our collective hearts’ cry was for peace.”
