While incarcerated in Birmingham for violating city ordinances against public demonstrations, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote arguably his most famous essay, "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," which was published in newspapers nationwide. The searing essay — written on scraps of smuggled paper — was a searing argument against clergy and their congregants who didn't like King's tactics and urged him to be patient. Pushing back, King argued they should reject false neutrality and complacency and embrace activism, as Jesus had, on behalf of the oppressed.
